Kodiak was founded in April 2018 to develop autonomous technology that carries freight forward—so people, partners, and the planet thrive. Navigating highway environments presents vastly different challenges than urban streets. Kodiak’s experienced team has developed the industry’s most advanced technology stack purpose-built specifically for long-haul trucks. From our sensor fusion system that maximizes the value of every sensing modality, to our unique lightweight mapping solution that allows our trucks to navigate ever-changing highway construction zones, our world-class team of industry pioneers is bringing the benefits of autonomy to the $800B a year trucking industry quickly, safely, and efficiently.
We are looking for a hardware/sensors engineer to join us on the Kodiak hardware team to help develop a world-class sensor suite and sensor cleaning system for autonomous trucking. The role will work closely with the hardware and software engineering teams developing, testing, and integrating sensors and cleaning systems into a Class 8 truck. The role will give you experience in the process of building an autonomous vehicle from the ground up.
In this role, you will:
- Define use cases and requirements for the autonomous-driving sensor suite, including cameras, lidar, radar, and near-range sensors.
- Research and evaluate the latest in autonomous-driving sensor technologies.
- Develop and execute hands-on sensor tests to help define vehicle architecture and improve perception performance.
- Assist with sensor integration onto the vehicle and debugging issues that arise.
- Design and evaluate sensor cleaning systems to enable vehicles to drive thousands of miles delivering freight through all weather.
- Work closely with contract manufacturers, suppliers, and external partners to ensure success.
- Work with the perception team to identify, understand, and solve sensor performance issues.
Qualifications:
- Strong technical background in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related fields.
- Autonomous-driving sensor experience a plus. (LiDAR, Radar, Camera, IMUs, etc.)
- Experience designing metallic and plastic parts in CAD and hands-on prototyping in a shop environment
- Experience with python-based data analysis and/or Arduino or similar prototyping
- A team leader. Whether formally or informally, you have previously played the lead role on several projects. You take ownership and drive the team to deliver exceptional results
- Proven ability to build and iterate quickly. You have experience from projects or internships with the product development life cycle in all of its stages and are comfortable in the earlier stages – moving from zero to one.
- Hands on. You are just as comfortable with a wrench as a keyboard. You have a deep understanding of manufacturing processes for both low and high volume production.
- Great communicator. You have experience writing clear, concise, and detailed documentation. You are skilled in leading and participating in cross-functional design reviews.
