Kodiak’s unique modular hardware approach integrates sensors into a streamlined sensor-pod structure that optimizes for perception, scalability, and maintainability. The company autonomously delivers freight daily for its commercial customers across the Sun Belt states and for Atlas Energy in the Permian Basin. Kodiak also leverages its commercial self-driving software to develop, test and deploy autonomous capabilities for the U.S. Department of Defense.
We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead our accounting team. This role reports into our CFO. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to financial reporting, the close process, audits and business process controls. This is a high visibility role where you will support leadership and scale the accounting team, helping ensure we are prepared to meet the high standards of being a public company. This role will require deep expertise in technical and operational accounting, practical problem-solving skills, and a good balance between managing existing accounting staff and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and dive into the details. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, self-starter, effective communicator, brings a focus on continuous improvement, and enjoys collaborating with people with a diverse set of talents, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

What you'll do:

  • Lead & plan the growth of the financial accounting function to build & develop the team, implement & execute scalable processes, and support the team to drive close process improvements.
  • Support the production of consolidated financial statements in accordance with US GAAP and related internal/external financial reports on a timely basis; ensure a scalable, efficient and accurate close process.
  • Assess and improve current accounting and payroll operations.
  • Plan, direct and coordinate internal controls/SOX compliance.
  • Coordinate and manage the annual external audit, serving as primary liaison with auditor leadership, as well as tax compliance workstreams, including state/local business taxes and license renewals.
  • Partner closely with internal audit and demonstrate a strong understanding of the key risks and processes in the organization to ensure appropriate business process controls are maintained.
  • Partner closely with FP&A to support the tracking of financial performance.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and commitment to quality as well as Kodiak’s values.
  • Hire, train, and retain skilled accounting staff.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting. CPA required; experience at a Big 4 audit firm a plus; experience with hardware manufacturing, inventory management and SaaS a plus.
  • 13+ years experience in progressive accounting/finance experience, 5+ years of managerial experience, and 3+ years in a public company environment. Taking a company public a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of and proficiency with current and upcoming accounting rules, and ability to articulate the impact of technical accounting changes on the business and proactively manage any risks.
  • Ability to design and implement processes that are SOX compliant and scalable.
  • Leadership skills: organized and structured, with the ability to set strategy, build a plan, develop and manage an accounting team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • International experience; ability to guide accounting across multiple entities and consolidations, and ensure compliance with relevant reporting standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with various levels of the organization, service providers, and vendors.
  • A highly entrepreneurial “roll up your sleeves” mentality.
  • Experience leading the implementation of and transition to Netsuite or similarly robust ERP system.
  • Forward-thinking, analytical and problem-solving mindset, drawn to building off of ambiguous and unsolved problems and “making it happen”.
  • Results-oriented, with a track record of scaling, leading, and driving improvements.

The annual salary range for this full-time position is $200,000-$300,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Actual salary ranges will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
