Description
As an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, you will design, develop, and scale precision assembly and measurement processes that directly shape the quality and reliability of Apple products.
You'll lead the research and development of novel automation technologies, own complex engineering challenges from concept through high-volume production, and collaborate with cross-functional teams and global manufacturing partners to continuously raise the bar.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end design, development, and bring-up of automated and semi-automated manufacturing equipment and fixtures, covering precision alignment, assembly, and measurement applications from concept through high-volume production
- Define equipment design requirements through detailed RFQ/RFPs; lead design reviews with machine suppliers throughout development, bring-up, and post-ramp improvements
- Provide technical direction to third-party automation suppliers and contract manufacturers; travel to supplier facilities and factories for equipment bring-up, acceptance testing, and production builds
- Engage early and continuously with product development teams to ensure new designs are mechanically manufacturable at scale; conduct machine DFM reviews and establish SOPs and assembly standards across the full product lifecycle
- Lead machine qualification activities including FAT/SAT, Cp/Cpk, GR&R, and GD&T analysis; apply DOE, SPC, and Six Sigma to validate process scalability and control
- Run structured experiments to characterize machine capability and drive measurable improvements in throughput, yield, and downtime
- Drive failure analysis on yield detractors and reliability issues from equipment and process perspectives; compile data, develop corrective actions, and communicate findings to multi-functional stakeholders
- Organize cross-functional reviews spanning machine requirements, design, qualification, and long-term capability
- Support warehouse automation process development across APAC distribution centers
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering
- 3+ years of engineering experience with custom automation equipment used for precision alignment, assembly, and/or measurement
- Hands-on knowledge of pneumatics, servo motors, robotics (6-axis and/or SCARA), CCD vision systems, adhesive dispensing, laser sensors, PLCs, and PC-based control systems
- Hands-on automation experience in one or more of the following: automated adhesive dispensing, pick-and-place, robotics, AOI (vision/laser), active alignment, or automated fastening
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to work effectively in a global environment and operate independently under pressure
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to contract manufacturer sites
- Proven experience with DOE, failure analysis, and statistical process control; ability to read and interpret engineering drawings including GD&T
- Experience with JMP and Six Sigma methodologies; Python scripting for data analysis and automation is a plus
- Familiarity with machine learning concepts and an understanding of how ML/AI can be leveraged for smart manufacturing applications
- Self-starter with strong attention to detail, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to thrive in a matrixed organization
- Knowledge of AI technology or machine learning, adapt to automation development working principle
- Proficiency in tolerance analysis for parts and assemblies
- NX CAD experience is a plus
- Mandarin language skills are a plus
