Description
This is a hands-on engineering role that blends feature testing with tooling work — you'll test both new and existing features directly, while also building the automation frameworks that scale that coverage over time.
Responsibilities
- Execute hands-on testing of existing and new features to validate functional quality and native user experience for Japan customers — using these findings to identify where manual coverage should become automated.
- Design, build, and maintain tools that validate Apple's products against Japan-specific requirements — IME behavior, carrier integrations, regulatory compliance, and regional and cultural UX expectations
- Work closely with our Japan QA lead to scale local test coverage through tooling and systems
- Triage and drive to resolution complex, locale-specific defects that require deep cultural and regulatory context to catch
- Collaborate with global engineering, product, and International QA teams to ensure the Japan customer experience is represented throughout the product development lifecycle
- Contribute reusable automation patterns and tooling back to the broader International QA organization for use across other markets
- Experience developing and executing test plans for both new and existing features, with the judgment to spot when a manual finding should become a permanent automated check.
- Business-level fluency in Japanese and English — you'll work daily with a Tokyo-based lead and collaborate cross-functionally with global (English-speaking) engineering and QA teams
- Strong software engineering fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design
- Proven experience building automation frameworks and tooling — writing test scripts, designing systems that make testing faster, more automated and reliable
- Proficiency in Python, Swift, Objective-C, or similar languages
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and test infrastructure at scale
- Experience leveraging AI coding/automation tools to accelerate test framework development and tooling work
- Working knowledge of localization/internationalization testing practices (IME input methods, date/currency/text formatting, CJK rendering considerations)
- Familiarity with Japan's regulatory and market landscape (e.g., SSCPA, carrier integration requirements) is a strong plus; willingness to build this expertise is required
- Detail-oriented, analytical thinker with a strong sense of ownership over quality and native user experience
- Comfortable working independently in a lean, fast-paced, distributed team — many of your collaborators will be in different time zones
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to represent Japan-market context to global stakeholders
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience. 3–6 years of experience in software test engineering, SDET, automation engineering, or a related discipline.
- None
